#monstera at Jardin des plantes (#latergram): look at the hole complexity of this leaf! Why the holes? It’s NOT to widthstand heavy rainfall. The answer, as with most plant adaptations, has to do with light gathering ability – to catch sporadic “sun flecks” as they filter through the tree canopy (look up: Muir – How Did the Swiss Cheese Plant Get Its Holes?). Think of it this way, if you wanted to make a bigger net with the same amount of material, the empty spaces would have to be larger but you’d get a larger overall catching area.
