6 Features Designers Say Aren’t Worth the MoneyLuke White

The most beautiful spaces in a home are usually the product of unbridled creativity, limitless time and patience, and, yes, money. Whether you have an expertly curated art collection or bookshelf, or you prefer the subtleties of quiet luxury, many people put their hard-earned money on display with fancy finishes, custom furniture, and high-tech touches.

“I can’t overstate the benefits of being surrounded by small, fancy touches,” says Austin designer Killy Scheer. “I use them to bring awareness to moments of understated luxury: Toes sinking into a plush hand-knotted rug; the textural elegance of an embroidered pillowcase; a brass switch plate or cheeky towel hook in a powder bath that starts a conversation.”

Many designers would be able to justify the sticker shock that typically comes with a kitchen island flushed in Carrara marble or custom furniture, but there are other flashy features that even leave the pros puzzled. To be honest, some of those high-ticket items feel overpriced, overhyped, and so not worth the money.

That’s exactly why we asked several designers to share the exorbitant accessories even they think are extra—and what they called out might shock you. With responses ranging from bougie bedding to futuristic finishings, overhyped home decor comes in a range of shapes and sizes. But the good news? Just because you eliminate these overpriced amenities from your home doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. To deftly bridge the gap between budget-friendly and beautiful, these experts are also sharing their favorite chic, cost-effective alternatives.
