Homeless Garden Project trainee Sharon Paight, top, is joined by volunteers Ryan Montgomery, Lily Parvex and Alaura Hopper in harvesting Salvia viridis at the project’s Natural Bridges Farm Thursday. The flowers will be used in bouquets that are provided to Homeless Garden’s Community Supported Agriculture program members.
The local nonprofit that provides job training, transitional employment and support services to individuals in Santa Cruz who are experiencing homelessness, is gearing up for its June 20 Sustain Supper fundraiser. The supper at the farm will feature a farm-to-table dinner created by chefs Estevan Silva and Andrea Mollenauer, and James Beard Award-winning farmer, policy strategist and social justice activist Mai-Nadine Nguyen will be the keynote speaker at the event. The June 20 menu entrees include quinoa with summer squash, braised Meyer lemon herb chicken and tofu with grilled citrus, onions and herbs. The meal also includes rosemary cornbread bites and cucumber roll hors d’oeuvres, kale salad with strawberries, fennel, shaved radish, candied pecans with a shallot lemon vinaigrette and crème fraîche cake for dessert. Tickets are available through Eventbrite or at the Homeless Garden Projects stores in downtown Santa Cruz and on the Capitola Esplanade.
