Channel 9 has revealed who will finally take the reins for Sydney’s 6pm bulletins for Friday and Saturday night after Georgie Gardener left the coveted role.
The veteran newsreader stepped down from the post earlier this year and left the network she had called home for more than two decades.
The search has been on to see who could fill those shoes, and Nine has landed on Mark Burrows.
The journalist has covered some of the biggest local and international news stories, and he said it’s an honour to take over Georgie’s spot.
“After so many years reporting for Channel 9, it’s a deep privilege to step into this role and continue bringing Sydney viewers the stories that matter,” he said in a statement.
“9News has always been about trust, accuracy and connection with the audience, and I’m looking forward to continuing that tradition.”

Peter Overton will still present Sydney’s 6pm bulletin from Sunday to Thursday.
On the days when Mark isn’t anchoring the bulletin, he will still file stories for 9News as a senior correspondent.
He’s been at Channel 9 for 20 years and has covered everything from the death of Princess Diana, the Iraq War, the Bali bombings, the Sydney Olympics and the wars in Afghanistan and more recently Ukraine.

He won a Logie Award for his coverage of the Romanian Revolution and a Walkley Award for his reporting on the Interlaken canyoning disaster in Switzerland.
9News Sydney’s director, Michael Best, said the bulletin is in safe hands with one of the network’s most “respected” reporters.
“Mark is one of the most trusted and experienced journalists in the country. He has reported from the frontlines and has an extraordinary ability to connect with viewers through clarity, credibility and calmness,” he said in a statement.
“We are thrilled to have him presenting 9News Sydney’s Friday and Saturday 6pm bulletins.”
Why did Georgie Gardener leave Channel 9?
Georgie stepped down from her role in mid-April, which marked an end to nearly a quarter-century stint at Nine.
Before her final bulletin, she explained why she was heading for greener pastures.
“As much as I love the craft of news reading, I really love it, I don’t need to tell you the news is getting increasingly bleak, and I think there is possibly an element of vicarious sadness trauma from continually reading pretty heavy stuff,” she told Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.
“But also, I’m 55 [and] I’ve got so much energy. There’s so much I want to go and do and explore and learn and hopefully contribute. So it just felt, to me, to be the time to move into a different area.”
Karl called Georgie one of the best newsreaders in the world and agreed that the job can be hectic at times.
“What people don’t know is what you put into your bulletins,” he told her.
“You feel it, and that, I can understand, has taken its toll.”
Georgie admitted she had “mixed emotions” about leaving but said she felt “really exhilarated” by the future.
“There’s lots of things that are playing around in my mind, things I’d really love to give back, in a way, contribute, but I don’t have anything precise in mind,” she said.
“I want to just give myself a bit of time out and see what percolates… see what comes to the surface.”
