Today on MyFigStix, we’re one month into my fig tree fertilizer experiment, and I think we’re already starting to see some differences!
The goal of this experiment is simple: determine which fertilizer program gives the best bang for the buck while requiring the least amount of time and effort.
For this test, I have:
π³ 2 Fig Trees on Fox Farm Water-Soluble Fertilizers
π³ 2 Fig Trees on Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster
π³ 2 Fig Trees on Osmocote
π³ 2 Fig Trees on Gaia Green
While we’re still early in the growing season and only one month into the experiment, some trends are beginning to emerge. In fact, one tree is already standing out from the rest.
In this video we’ll discuss:
β’ Growth differences after 30 days
β’ Visual observations from each fertilizer program
β’ Ease of use and time investment
β’ Cost considerations
β’ Which trees appear to be responding best so far
β’ What I’ll be watching moving forward
This experiment is all about helping fig growers make informed decisions about fertilizer choices without wasting money or time on products that don’t deliver results.
Remember, this is just the first update, and we’ll continue following these trees throughout the growing season.
Which fertilizer do you think is winning so far?

I am truly addicted to collecting fig trees. I am trying to learn as much as I can about all things figs thru experimentation. Trying fig tree air layers of all styles to learn what works best. What fig cutting rooting technigue is best for less money. How to prune fig trees for best fruiting results. I want to share with all of you what I am learning thru my fig tree experiments.

One month in and I'm already seeing some interesting results!
For those following along, these are the fertilizer programs being tested:
Fox Farm
Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster
Osmocote
Gaia Green
Right now, one tree is definitely catching my attention, but we've still got a long growing season ahead.
Before watching, which fertilizer would YOU predict wins this experiment?
And if you've used any of these products on your fig trees, I'd love to hear your experiences below!
You're the best Figstix! Still salty I didnt win an Angelito!! haha jk keep up the good work!!
on your CDD look at how its such a little tree with tons of fruits lol that is amazing man. My CDD Roja is so slow growing, but my CDD blanca negra is hitting the sky in a season. What size grow bags are you figs in btw?
If you grew a pot plant with each fig tree, would it reduce plant stress ???? π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π π
Off topic, but in regards to fig rust. I was at a collector's house picking up more tree (N.E. Houston). He had an interesting observation, trees in pots already showed significant signs of rust, but in-ground trees had none. I went to my trees in Louisiana and noticed the same thing. I wonder why pot grown figs experience rust sooner than that of in ground trees? For my trees, they are both fed the same fertilizer. Have a blessed weekend!
I have been using Gai Green for many years along with Osmocote plus. Gai Green has a ton of great organic ingredients and my plants do very well on it. We only offer it in 1lb at Bodega Gardens at the moment but we will carry the 20 & 40 lb bags soon. In the larger quantities it makes more sense economically something like 2.xx per pound but previously I was buying and mixing most of these ingredients so it saves me time. Phosphate rock, bone meal, fishbone meal, mineralized phosphate, and mined potassium sulphate, Blood meal, feather meal, and insect frass. It has trace Minerals & Amendments also like Basalt rock dust, glacial rock dust, greensand, kelp meal, humic acid, and gypsum! Itβs very nutrient dense. Thanks for the video Danny good stuff man. βπΌ
Where did you get those planter boxes? They are awesome
What Gaia green product did you use? I have and use both all purpose 4-4-4 and the bloom booster 2-8-4. I also top dress it at 3 tablespoons per gallon of soil. I use the 2 at a 50/50 ratio. It works well. I also have switched the Gaia Green all purpose for some plant tone 5-3-3 with the same results. I only switched because I got a deal on 8 pound bags. I got them for $4 each 8 pound bag of plant tone. I could not pass on it so I bought about 10 bags. It's very good organic stuff as well.
Definitely a fun experiment to do and it looks like all of the trees are doing very well. In order for this to truly be a results orientated experiment though you really need to use 8 trees of the same variety. All about the same starting size and then divide them up into 4 groups with the different fert regimen. I think that's really the only way to see if there is a difference.
So, this winter start 8 cuttings of the same variety. Then next spring when you start the experiment be sure to pull all of the figs off the trees and focus on just growing the tree at 1st. Once figs start appearing you can then note if one fert regimen produces figs faster than another. Then the 2nd and 3 rd years you can see if any of the regimens yield more fruit over the course of a season. As you pick each fruit be sure to weigh them so you can compare by # of fruit as well as total weight for the season. I think after 3 full seasons the results would be very interesting.
looking good, have you considered spraying sulfur? olympian is showing signs of mites in my honest opinion. A good amount of your figs seem to be. in the least offensive way I can say it
Lots of folks state that you can air layer the tissue culture trees to get them to have a more normal tree shape.
I love this experiment, Danny! Thank you! I wish we could compare my JADAM with your best fertilizer regimen through to tasting. I may do that with a local figsterβ¦. I really THINK my figs taste differently than those figs on a synthetic fertilizer.
Done all that . For the money and trouble NOTHING beats Osmocote plus ! Last 10 years
Nifty results, Danny! π₯°π±β€οΈ That Col de Dame Blanc looks super full and lush, and the new growth is thick and strong looking! Iβm gonna look into that Gaia Green stuff. π€ I vaguely feel like the name is familiar, like I might have used it sometime in the past. Weβre finally getting some rain, so hopefully Iβll see a nice growth flush after these few days of rain! β€ Hv a blessed day! π
Vigor varies from one variety to another, growth and or fruiting. Consistency of food and water is key for success. Organic is the long term solution build your soil structure for the in ground trees. Great video and experiment.
Alaskan fish emulsion works on everything I have tried that isnβt dead.
Awesome video Danny. We will have the 20lb bags and 40lb bags of Gai Green next month. Iβll save you one sir
Surprisingly I we are not getting any fig rust this year even with all this rain, last year we did I believe around this time or it's just that it is moved to July and August for us π
I love gaia green!
Has your Canadria given you fruit? I really want that one.
Good video. Thanks for the update. Keep them coming.
Ross fig boss only uses Osmocote
Trees looking amazing brother. Really great test Danny. Very excited to hear about the results. YOU ROCK!!!!
Man I bet those CdD are going to going to slap hard brother
The heat is a factor too, but I am testing GG alone. Well I keep talking about it but not doing it lol
