SPOKANE — East Valley Middle School shop class students joined seniors at area assisted living centers this week for the annual Gardening for Grands event.

The community program brings young people to senior living facilities throughout Spokane to plant flowers and build relationships across generations.

The sunny weather provided perfect conditions for the outdoor activity, which beautifies facilities while fostering connections between youth and seniors.

Students demonstrated excitement about the hands-on project and interacting with older community members. Seniors expressed appreciation for the students’ hard work and company.

“I think this is amazing and I would love to see everyone who had anything to do with this and the plants raise your hand. All of you! Look at you! This is so impressive,” said one senior participant.

The initiative bridges generational gaps while providing practical benefits to assisted living facilities. Students apply classroom skills to real-world projects that benefit local seniors.

Senior residents will continue to enjoy the planted flowers throughout the growing season.
