Fourth summer here and starting to learn the rhythms of the yard. Previous owners did not like to use any chemicals in the yard, and then I live next-door to a guy who has a yard that pretty much looks like a golf course. I’m trying to find a middle ground here. The dandelions are so thick in some areas that it’s completely choking out the grass. I’ve sprayed to try and keep them under control, but obviously had not been hitting them hard enough.

This year I’m two sprays of Killex in, actually below their recommended amount for the property size. This past weekend I borrowed my neighbours dethatcher and gave the lawn a heavy dethatch in cross directions and mowed everything to the centre and picked it up with a bagger.

Mid week this coming week we have about 30 to 40 mm (1-1.5 inches) of rain forecasted. So I’m hoping to get the neighbours fertilizer spreader and get the 100 kg (220 lbs) of fertilizer. I purchased on the lawn before the rain falls.

For the first time, finally feeling proud about how the lawn looks. The first year we were here it was pretty decent, but we had a really wet year, followed by a really dry year which reeked havoc on it. This year gets looking the best it has so far since I moved in.
