Thanks to a comment on a root flair post a few weeks ago, I had a bit of a lightbulb moment. We bought a house with a 20-ish foot (long leaf?) pine in the back yard. It was under-cared for but didn't look unwell. The comment regarded grass up to the tree trunk, which is what mine had. I got curious and started scraping away. I ended up removing about 6 inches of mulch piled up against this poor tree, all hidden by the grass that had grown up and around it.
I may have removed too much coverage, but I was really eager to get out as much mulch as possible to see what was going on under all of it. I'm worried about the roots that have had to cross over each other and plan on getting a professional to assess it's long-term health.
I just wanted to express my gratitude to this sub for the great information and support! I'd love any feedback or suggestions and have included a picture of the preliminary excavation inspection by Tank.

Roots can’t girdle roots and I only see one root of concern on the left side.
The exposed surface roots are of no concern. In Japan with the best tree takers in the world they actually expose surface roots much more than we do.
Picture I took while visiting and appreciating the trees there:
