Fertilizer is essential and will help your trees produce a healthy amount of fruit. You’ll need to apply it consistently in order for it to be effective, but don’t go overboard—too much fertilizer can be detrimental to your orchard.

So what exactly happens when you over-fertilize fruit trees, and how can you avoid doing so? We asked experts how to determine the proper amount, as well as the right times to fertilize for best results.

What Happens When You Over-Fertilize

The first thing to consider when applying fertilizers is that they consist of salts—not necessarily sodium chloride—but other ionic compounds. “The addition of these salts will invariably change the pH and overall chemistry of the soil to which the fertilizer is applied,” says Tim Hartmann, assistant professor and extension fruit specialist at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

For example, adding too much fertilizer with ammonium, or NH4, can result in the soil becoming too acidic over time. “Most complete fertilizers contain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), while some only supply one or two elements. Others may also have micronutrients such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), as well,” he says. “Adding too much of any of these elements can result in abnormal growth or even injury to the tree.” 

The most common example Hartmann encounters is excessive nitrogen application, although over-application of any element can cause problems. “While nitrogen is important for normal growth and function of the tree, like amino acid production, too much can be harmful,” he says. This can lead to the following:

Less fruit. The first symptom of too much nitrogen is excessive leafy growth. “This often results in the tree canopy becoming too dense and shading much of the interior portions of the canopy,” says Hartmann. “The result is poorly colored fruit and even the tree becoming less productive.” 

Increased risk of disease. Too much nitrogen can also cause the tree to become too large and require more pruning. “As the canopy becomes too dense, it’s also more difficult for air to move through it, resulting in more disease,” Hartmann says. “Insects and many pathogens prefer the excessively succulent and rapid growth resulting from over-fertilized trees.” 

Cold injury. “Impacts are not limited locally, as too much nitrogen and phosphorus can result in these elements moving into and polluting ground and surface water,” Hartmann says, “with many negative downstream effects.”

Other Complications

Because fertilizers are salts, they can also interfere with the tree roots taking up water. “If more solutes or dissolved solids are present outside the root than inside it, water cannot move into the root,” Hartmann says. “We see clear evidence of this when way too much fertilizer is added.” 

The edges of the leaves often appear burned or necrotic, as if the tree didn’t receive enough water; the tree may completely die as roots are severely injured.

“Trees that survive fertilizer burn will grow slowly for a while until new fine roots are developed again,” Hartmann says. “If it’s suspected that a tree received too much fertilizer, the soil around the tree should be flushed with large amounts of water in order to leach or flush out the excess fertilizer salts.”

The Right Amount of Fertilizer to Apply

Tammy Sons, gardener and owner of TN Nursery, doesn’t blame gardeners for being liberal with their fruit tree fertilizer. “Some folks are under the impression that more fertilizer means more fruit, but it comes down to balance,” she says. “Get a soil test done to show you what is needed, as the demands differ depending on the soil and how old the tree is.”

In addition to conducting a soil test, asking your local extension agent or independent nursery can help determine the typical soil needs in your area.

“While fertilizer regimen may vary, depending on the species of the fruit tree or even the tree’s age, a good rule of thumb is 0.1 pounds of actual nitrogen per inch of trunk diameter, not exceeding one pound,” Hartmann says. “For example, a 2-inch wide peach tree would receive 0.2 pounds of actual nitrogen.” 

The Best Time to Fertilize

The best time to fertilize varies by species and region—but spring is generally best.

“In the case of conventional products like granular fertilizers, splitting up the fertilizer regimen into two or more different application events will help avoid risk of over-fertilizing and likelihood of pollution of nearby water resources,” Hartmann says. “Half or more of the total fertilizer should be applied just before the tree resumes growth in the early spring, and the second half usually a few months later.”

Many organic fertilizer sources like compost require more time for the nitrogen to be rendered chemically available to the roots. “Consequently, these should be applied earlier, such as during the winter, or even late fall, depending on region,” he says.

It’s generally best to not apply fertilizer—especially nitrogen—after mid-summer, as this can promote vigorous growth in the fall and make the tree more prone to cold injury.

Common Mistakes

It’s important to remember that fertilizer is only available to the plant when dissolved in water. “For conventional granular fertilizer products that are broadcast or side-dressed, this means that rain must occur soon afterward for the material to dissolve and enter the soil-water solution,” Hartmann says. “Alternatively, the fertilizer would need to be watered in with a sprinkler or other irrigation.” 

Many people forget this part. “If the product sits out for a long period without being watered in, much of the nitrogen may volatilize away into the atmosphere,” Hartmann says. “Additionally, these products should be placed near the drip line of the tree where root uptake is most active.”
