How do you grow more of your own food without losing the charm and beauty of a cottage garden?
In this video, I’m sharing how we’ve gradually incorporated food-producing plants throughout our garden while keeping the relaxed, informal cottage garden style we love. From blackberry-covered arches and fruit trees planted amongst flowers, to an antique iron bed filled with herbs, I’ll show how productive plants can become part of the garden’s character rather than being confined to a separate vegetable patch.
We’ll take a walk around the garden as I finish planting for the season and discuss some of the ways we’ve blended flowers, foliage and food into a cohesive design. I’ll also share how focusing on growing some of the more expensive items from our grocery bill has made growing our own food increasingly worthwhile.
In this video:
🌿 Growing food in a cottage garden
🌿 Blackberry arches and edible garden structures
🌿 Fruit trees in borders and decorative containers
🌿 Herbs grown in a repurposed antique iron bed
🌿 Rhubarb as an ornamental edible plant
🌿 Integrating a greenhouse into a cottage garden design
🌿 Tomatoes, basil and productive growing spaces
🌿 Balancing beauty and productivity in the garden
If you enjoy cottage gardening, edible landscaping, kitchen gardens, productive gardening, garden tours and traditional garden design, I hope you’ll find some inspiration here.
I’d love to hear how you’ve incorporated food-producing plants into your own garden, so let me know in the comments below.

Great video and way to start my morning drinking coffee and watching/learning so much from you. I took your idea from a previous video with the wood dowel and upside down small terracotta pots in the garden to keep squirrels or nighttime critters away from my plants. It works! 😊 You have so many beautiful thriving plants I love all of it. The San Marzanno tomatoes yum! I’m growing my first tomato plant right now ( cherry tomatoes) if that turns out good so far it is I want to try San Marz too. The older I get the more sensitive to foods I’m getting too with inflammation especially gluten. I only eat whole grain pasta and or gluten free. Thanks for sharing your amazing garden. I love all your videos. ❤ ~ Teresa from North Carolina USA
The herb bench and pots around it looked like something I want to try near my kitchen. I have tons of pots and want to grow more eatable things in them. Lovely
Combining flowers with fruit and vegetables is such a good way to attract bees to the garden for pollination. Where I live bees have been affected by varroa mite so we need to actively attract and support bees. Your garden looks beautiful – I especially love the abundance of chives and their beautiful purple allium flowers. 🙂🌸
Good morning Claire, your garden is looking so healthy and lush. We are starting June in need of rain. Our lawns are looking a bit brown. Seeing your bright green garden makes me a bit envious lol. Have a lovely week
It's almost 11 PM in Tokyo now. I'm admiring your wonderful cottage garden and delicious-looking vegetables. It's a testament to your daily efforts. At 82 years old, your blog gives me energy. Thank you.
Siempre buenas ideas !!
Gracias y feliz semana 🤗
Your garden has made such progress.
I remember the episode from years ago when you refreshed the seating area on the lawn next to the stone wall.
It has come a long way since. I wish I had been able to make better progress with my gardens.
Your channel is so inspirational in all aspects. Thanks for all your hard work.
Claire, you garden is just my style and so beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us.

🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 (tears welling up emoji) so peaceful! So practical. But please do tell. How do you live and breathe without chickens? I bet you would if you could. I hear the traffic. You live in a town. I let mine in my garden to eat bugs AFTER my plants are a little older so they can’t hurt them. I wish I could come visit your family.thank you for sharing your life with us. ❤
Also, I know a peaceful little frog pond is in your not to distant future. And possibly a wattle latticed fences.

I could just watch this all day. You have made such good use of your property. Beautiful flowers and shrubs plus lots of veggies and fruits. The tomato plants in the greenhouse look so healthy and happy. Do you have a front garden with plants too? Thank you for the tour and tips. 😊
The true English cottage garden began as a packed vegetable garden with flowers and shrubs thrown into the empty spaces, paths leading here and there without form. Pretty wild things were brought into the garden like cowslips and species roses, and polyanthus. This goes back hundreds of years, but the cottage garden has evolved with need … now it has structure like yours, and it's flowers and roses and other shrubs first, then herbs and vegetables here and there. Yours is very pretty.
Seeing the picture of your garden before and watching your progress is amazing. Beautiful! Growing your veggies in with the flowers is wonderful. Thanks for sharing. God bless
So interest to see how you combine edibles within the garden. It’s the direction I’m going in as well so you’ve given me inspiration.
What a great idea to put the fruit trees in amongst the cottage garden plants ! For some reason, i always think the trees should be in their own little fruit tree section , but this works perfectly, and you also get all the wonderful blossoms to add to the flowers beneath, genius!!! I'm definitely doing that when I have the opportunity😊. Another great episode, Claire .
Garden looks great 😊
How beautiful. Love it all. Thank you for sharing your great ideas in the cottage garden, which, when all is said and done, is my favourite.
Your garden is amazing. Thank you for the map showing the full layout. It is so much bigger than I thought. We usually just see bits at a time as you are working in it. ❤👍
Cottage gardens were traditionally a mixture of fruit, vegetables & flowers
Oh my goodness, what an incredible change in the garden from when you first started!! Unbelievable how much effort and detail you're put into this beautiful little oasis; am always amazed at all of your efforts and the results, which are just stunning. And of course, the hero of the vlog, Sir Humphrey, is always attentive. Love that critter! Claire, you make all of this look so easy and very enticing. Thank you!
Beautiful garden!! How do you mow your lawn paths? So narrow. Thank you!!🌿💚🌲
Another beautiful video ❤
What a beautiful video….your garden gives me so much joy
Can I ask what led you to understand your food intolerance….I would never think of ingredients like acidity regulators….we are a coeliac household but still with some triggering issues
