RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Great Plains Botanic Garden near Hermosa will open its gates to the public June 12-13 for its annual Open House.

Visitors can explore the garden from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, featuring blooming penstemons, a cactus garden, displays of native shortgrass prairie grasses and walking trails throughout the property.

The Log Cabin Visitor Center will also be open, offering free coffee and snacks along with a bookstore and gift shop.

The garden was established in honor of Claude Barr, a noted South Dakota naturalist and botanist whose work helped promote the study and appreciation of Great Plains plant life.

The Great Plains Botanic Garden is located about five miles south of Hermosa on the east side of Highway 79. Organizers encourage visitors to bring a camera, sunscreen and a hat. Pets are not allowed.

More information is available through the Great Plains Native Plant Society.
