Tips on feeding crows from a wildlife rehabilitator. Seems like dog or cat kibble is a good simple option. To keep away squirrels, I found some people saying they coat unsalted peanuts in spicey anti-squirrel stuff.

Crow Food
Meat, eggs, peanuts, suet, cat kibble are all suitable. Nuts, grapes, peas and corn too. Fatter foods should be offered in colder months, and protein-rich foods should be offered in the Spring/ Summer (during the nesting activities)

# Feeding Stations
If you are planning to feed the crows in your garden/yard, you will need to set up a feeding station. A feeding station can be something as simple as a shallow dish of water and a tray with food next to it. Make sure the area is safe from predators, and that birds have enough space to land and take off in haste should they need to. A clear area with no obstacles in the way seems to be the preferred setting by far. Always give a safe space from hedgerows as they may hide mischievous cats.
I cannot stress enough the importance of cleaning and disinfecting the food station daily — doing so will prevent viruses and bacteria from thriving, ensuring your guests remain healthy. Trays are much easier to keep clean than bowls, especially if it rains.
Fresh water must be available at all times, bearing in mind that crows like to dip and soak their food so you may have to change the water more often than once a day. If you are able to add a bird bath, the above will also apply and you will have to accept that your bird bath will most likely turn into a food-prep area, with the occasional small animal carcass.

Yes we have what we call our “property crows” they co-exist with our chickens and 100% help with predatory birds. We are happy to feed them because they provide a service.

I don’t have chickens but really want to befriend my local crows. I’ve thought about it alit. How did you go about making your first crow friend?
We did this. We have like 4-7 that are always on the property, we started feeding them. We don’t need security cameras anymore. Never lost a hen to a predator. They stay out of the garden and the compost pile. One time they were going absolutely nuts at the edge of the property so we went to check it out…the little used tiny cemetery that abuts our property was getting a new resident.
The downside is they are part of a larger murder in the winter. Like much Much MUCH larger. Easily 10,000 crows. You don’t get a warning when they all decide that they are sleeping in your trees today.
Yep I’ve been tossing a handful of peanuts (or bread ends when I have them) to our local crows at the same time I feed the chickens in the morning. There are 2-3 that have really stuck around and gotten comfortable. They even come down and putter about the yard with the chickens sometimes and no one is bothered.
One time earlier this year I came outside and the girls were all crowded together behind the shrubs and the crows were up in the trees making warning calls. I won’t lie, I felt validated and proud of them at that moment lol. I haven’t specifically seen them drive off a hawk per se, but I also haven’t lost any birds to predators.
Since you asked someone else – I have seen the crows pop into the chicken run and take drinks from the water, but I haven’t seen them go in the coop itself or steal eggs.
Before he passed, my Dad let ‘Crow Daddy’ happily chow on his cherry trees. In exchange, they kept the swarms of smaller birds away from the yard.
Then again, he also built a giant stone mansion (a pile) for the chipmunks that ate the strawberries. Hmmm…
