Well, HGTV just ranked the best garden centers (also known as nurseries) in the United States and listed one historic garden center in Wayland as the best in Massachusetts.

“From multi-generational mom-and-pop businesses to bigger enterprises that haven’t lost their human touch, you can’t go wrong adding one of these garden centers to your bucket list whether you are traveling cross-country or just to the next county,” the Home and Garden Network said.

HGTV’s pick for the Bay State is a classic, first established in 19th century.

Russell’s Garden Center in Wayland is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The family-run business is one of the largest garden centers in New England and is now onto the fifth generation of owners.

HGTV picked Russell’s Garden Center because of their longevity and how they serve the community around them.

“An especially nice feature is an on-site Flower Shop with both fresh and artificial flowers with a team of floral designers on hand to create everyday bouquets, holiday arrangements, flowers for proms, funerals and weddings,” HGTV said.

They’re also the oldest garden center in Massachusetts, as they were established in 1876. They’re hitting their 150th birthday this year.

“Originally a farm market, Russell’s added a wholesale business delivering vegetables and flowers to Boston’s Haymarket Square,” the garden center’s website said. “Today, Russell’s has grown into a 5th generation, family owned retail business, and continues to be one of the largest, single location garden centers in New England.”
