Pruning is an essential gardening task carried out throughout the year to stimulate new growth. Additional advantages include preserving the shape and size of plants, helping to keep your garden looking its best. David Denyer, a garden expert from Eflorist, has stated that June is a “critical month” for gardeners, marking a pivotal period for pruning flowers.

The expert said, “Pruning during this period helps remove spent blooms, encourages new growth, and maintains plant health.” David has revealed which flowers Britons ought to be focusing on this month.

1. Rambling roses

By deadheading faded blooms, gardeners will stimulate the production of further flowers throughout the season.

The expert recommended removing any dead, diseased or damaged stems before cutting back any branches that have outgrown their allotted space.

David added: “Tie in new, vigorous shoots as these will flower next year. Pruning after flowering helps the plant bloom well, prevents a tangled mess, ensuring flowers don’t grow too high up the plant.”

2. Perennials

“Commonly known as the Chelsea Chop in the UK, a pruning technique which coincides with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, involves cutting back plants at the end of May and June to prevent your plants from flopping.”

This technique helps to promote bushier growth while also improving the overall health of the plant.

3. Early-flowering perennials

By weaving the Chelsea Chop into your June gardening schedule, the expert noted that gardeners can guarantee their perennials continue to flourish throughout the summer months.

4. Evergreens

“Most evergreen shrubs are low-maintenance and require little to no regular pruning.

“However, when required, pruning is carried out during early summer to maintain their shape, control their size, and remove any frost-damaged stems.”
