South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Peninsula does, on rare and sweet and ethereal occasion, stay open through the sunset.

That’s happened a few times in recent months, with one more round to go, thanks to The Canopy Club, a nighttime music-and-more party inspired by the TROLLS sculptures currently on display around the lush location.

But summertime at the 87-acre expanse summons a different sort of soirée, one that features live music, a caboodle of cute to-dos for kids, and the opportunity to savor the sky as it turns from blue to pink to purple to star-filled.

It’s the Sunset Series, a warm-spirited warm-weather offering at the garden, which is well-loved for its roses, Moreton Bay Fig Trees, and peaceful pathways. The wind-down series is back for a nearly three-month run, with happenings cropping up each Thursday night.

Live tunes at the Upper Meadow will be a main draw, and each Thursday will have its own distinct vibe. A night inspired by the songbook of Jimmy Buffett kicks things off June 4, with Neil Diamond music, Dueling Pianos, Yacht Rock to follow in the weeks soon to come.

Look for the Kids Zone on the Lower Meadow, too, with a host of to-dos for the tots in attendance. Bubbles, an obstacle course, and other outdoorsy and sweet pursuits will festoon the high-energy area.

And Dottie’s at the Koi Pond will be open, should you find yourself in the mood for ice cream or a snack.

Good to keep in mind? SOAR, the garden’s tropical butterfly experience, will be open to those guests with a VIP ticket from 5 to 7:30 p.m., so do consider going with a VIP admission if basking in the beauty of hundreds of butterflies is high on your list.
