Chewelah is growing! Fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers… And we need you! The Chewelah Community Garden is under development on a beautiful plot of ground behind the St. Paul Lutheran church, adjacent to the creek and its park-like setting. Inspired by community member Kathi Myron, the garden will host eight plots to start with, each 8×10 or smaller for individuals, families or even students who may want to participate. There will be a $20 fee for each plot for the season which runs from May through the October harvest, and a percentage fee, chipped in by everyone, for water. Each gardener is asked to provide 5-10 hours a month of volunteer time and everyone will have a shared role.
A Bingo night fundraiser is slated for Wednesday, May 13, 6 p.m. at Fired Up Pizza in Chewelah. Participation is $10 with all proceeds going to the Chewelah Community Garden.
New to gardening? Kathi suggests that all are welcome and there will be opportunities for mentorship and learning along the way. If you are interested and not sure you have the means, there will be some sponsorship to provide seeds and other needs.
As the Community Garden in Chewelah takes root, Kathi envisions many opportunities for growth. She is looking for others who might want to share a leadership role in organization, community outreach, corporate sponsorship, or donations. The garden, Kathi believes, is a place that offers a sense of responsibility, caring, and builds community through common ground. “The key to a successful garden,” she quotes, “lies not just in the soil but in the relationships you cultivate.”
