Housebuilder Bewley Homes is celebrating National Children’s Gardening Week by inspiring pupils at a local primary school.

Bewley’s sales and marketing director Tracey Forbes-Taylor visited Burghclere Primary School to talk to the pupils at an assembly about the importance of gardening and encouraging children to take an interest in the outdoors from an early age.

As part of the initiative, Bewley donated 100 packets of wildflower seeds, which pupils planted in the school gardens to help create colourful spaces for wildlife and pollinators to thrive.

During the visit, Ms Forbes-Taylor also gave pupils a demonstration of how to plant seeds successfully, and shared tips on how to care for growing plants throughout the summer months.

To continue the interest beyond the classroom, Bewley launched a ‘Grow the Tallest Sunflower’ competition for pupils, with prizes set to be awarded later this summer.

Ms Forbes-Taylor said: “We were delighted to support National Children’s Gardening Week and spend time with the pupils to talk about the importance of gardening.

“Encouraging children to connect with nature, understand how plants grow and enjoy being outdoors is so important.

“Our new development at Princess Gardens is only a short distance away from the school and we wanted to team up to celebrate this fun initiative.

“We chose wildflower and sunflower seeds to help the children understand how important they are to attract bees and help towards a healthy environment.”

Burghclere Primary School headteacher Beulah Letchford said: “This has been a wonderful initiative for our pupils and a fantastic way to encourage children to engage with the natural environment.

“Gardening teaches patience, responsibility and teamwork, and the children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the activities.

“We are very grateful to Bewley Homes for engaging with the school and helping create such a memorable experience.”

Bewley Homes managing director Andrew Brooks said: “Biodiversity sits at the heart of every development we deliver.

“The company is committed not simply to protecting the natural environment, but to enhancing it, with every scheme designed to achieve biodiversity net gain – ensuring the ecological value of a site is measurably better after development than it was before.

“This is an important distinction often misunderstood outside the industry and the wider public perception.

“Rather than negatively impacting biodiversity, we actively create more sustainable environments through carefully considered landscaping, habitat creation and long-term ecological planning.

“This commitment ensures developments leave a lasting positive environmental legacy alongside the new homes and communities we build.”

National Children’s Gardening Week (May 23-31) is an annual campaign designed to encourage children and families to enjoy gardening and outdoor activities while learning more about nature and the environment.
