Brooke Haflei, 7, of Traverse City, helps water a newly planted grafted apple tree Thursday at the Grand Traverse Area Children’s Garden behind the Traverse Area District Library in Traverse City. The tree was planted in honor of Doug Skinner, who helped build the library. Executive Director Sarah Kushell said a $60,000 grant from the Allen Foundation over two years will support renovations to the walk through garden behind the library. , including invasive species removal, native plantings and new signage. The funding also will support programming staff, a volunteer coordinator and the garden’s goal of becoming 70% native plants. Kushell said the grant helped bring on program staff member Tera John, whose work emphasizes well-being and connection to both self and the earth.
