Rochester City School District students learned where food comes from on Wednesday.

Third graders took over the Foodlink Community Farm for a hands-on learning experience, getting to see what goes into composting, farming, gardening and food production, all while finding out how important overall nutrition and eating healthy is.

Students even received their own starter plants to take home.

Foodlink and Rochester Ecology Partners teamed up to make this all possible.

“It just provides them with an opportunity to understand what’s going on in the world outside of the classroom. That farms are an important part of our communities and especially our urban community here. Also, learning about where their food comes from and what nutritious food is is all part of the school curriculum,” said Chris Widmaier, executive director of Rochester Ecology Partners.

There are around 40 field trips planned this school year that include students from all 27 RCSD elementary schools.
