A longtime family-owned garden center in Madison County is preparing to close its doors after more than seven decades in business.Callaway’s Yard & Garden in Gluckstadt announced Wednesday that owners Brint and Annette Callaway are retiring, bringing an end to the third-generation family business that began in 1954.“As a proud third-generation family business, this decision marks the end of a chapter that has meant everything to our family,” the couple said in a statement.The business has served customers in central Mississippi for 72 years.“What began with our grandparents continued through our parents and carried on by us,” the statement said. “We are deeply grateful for the loyalty and support our customers have shown us through the years. It has been an honor to serve multiple generations of families.”The Callaways said the decision to close was difficult, but they are ready to spend more time with family in retirement.Callaway’s Yard & Garden was founded in 1954 by Robert Moody and Lorene Callaway. The original shop eventually expanded into a full-service garden center for home gardeners.According to the family, David Callaway began working in the business while he was in junior high school. His wife, Betty Callaway, later helped expand the store’s Christmas business. Their son, Brint Callaway, and his wife, Annette, continued operating and managing the company.Robert Moody Callaway also had a long career in education before opening the business. He served as principal of what later became H.V. Watkins Elementary School in Jackson from 1936 to 1956. In 1966, Callaway High School in Jackson was named in his honor.The family did not announce a specific closing date.
