Chilliwack Rotary clubs help prep gardens for Bowls of Hope

A garden that helps feed children in Chilliwack got some TLC recently, for the Rotary’s Epic Day of Service.

More than 50 local Rotarians and volunteers showed up at the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope community garden on May 16, to lend a hand as the growing season begins. The rain and cool weather did not dampen the volunteers’ spirits as they came armed with gardening gloves, rakes, wheelbarrows and other tools of the gardening trade. They prepared beds and planted vegetables in the garden, located on Wolfe Road.

Last year, the garden provided more than 10,000 pounds of homegrown food, used as part of school lunch and breakfast programs run by Bowls of Hope. The team of volunteers was supported with seedling and plant donations from The Local Harvest Market and Minter Gardening.

The volunteers involved were from the Chilliwack Bowls Of Hope Society, Rotary Club of Chilliwack, Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser and the Rotary Club of Chilliwack After Hours.

“A good and productive morning was had by all,” said Dr. Ralph Jones, Rotary Club of Chilliwack club president. “Feeding the hungry in Chilliwack is one of the important outreaches our club works on all year long.”
