MASSENA — Could you use free loans of gardening and other outdoor tools, fishing gear, lawn games, or extra tables and chairs for a special event?

You can now borrow these items from Massena Public Library if you are at least 18 years old and have a library card.

Heavy duty garden and lawn tools include rakes, augers, pruning sheers, soil test kit, seedling heat mat and larger heating pads, steel tamper, post hole digger, post level, steel edger, fizz fertilizer, leaf blower, angle grinder, electric drill rod set, Fishers 2-in-1 saw, and mushroom drill bit.

For outdoor enthusiasts, fishing rods and equipment, corn hole, horse shoes, can jam, ladder toss, croquet , badminton, bug catchers and snow shoes are available.

“We recently added gardening tools and fishing equipment to the ‘Library of Things’ that can be borrowed,” said Krista Briggs, Massena Library Director.

They were purchased from a grant Briggs wrote to the NNY Library Network. The grant originally covered a Garden to Table program for children last year.
With some extra money left over, Briggs was able to buy garden tools and fishing gear as well ,because “the grant was for encouraging food independence and nutrition literacy. It encourages people to get involved in providing their own food,” said Briggs.

Free loans allow people who don’t have the funds to buy the gardening tools or fishing gear,  or they want to try them out to see if they are interested,  the opportunity to do so, she said.

“I am so excited the library is able to empower the community with food independence and even recreation independence. Fishing isn’t just for food. It’s also a sport and a fantastic relaxation. Fishing is a big part of Massena’s identity as well,” said Briggs.

“Strike First Bait, in Massena, gave the library a great deal on the fishing equipment and put it together,” she added.

Although not new, other library loans include 10 six-ft. tables, 40 folding chairs, a Ninja Food Cooker, and  recreation activities such as corn hole, horse shoes, croquet, badminton, ladder toss, Kan Jam and snowshoes.

“These items get used a lot by the community for events at homes or organizations, so it was really great to expand the collection of things we can loan out,” said Briggs.

They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact the Massena Library at 315-769-9914.
