Capitalizing on Maine coming back to life in many different ways, McLaughlin Garden and Homestead is holding its annual Lilac Festival.Staff at the garden say that it is a total sensory experience when you walk into the garden. Maine’s Total Coverage spoke with Leslie Guenther, the director of the McLaughlin Garden, on Sunday morning.”They smell great. You know, I’m a former camp counselor, and one of my favorite songs went ‘I want to wake up in the morning where the purple lilacs grow,’ and I’m having that experience this morning,” Guenther said.Every day of the festival at noon there will be a “lilac care and garden tour” led by Corey Kotfila, the garden’s horticulturist. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. people will be able to try lilac tea, brewed using lilac syrup.The Lilac Festival takes place from Thursday, May 22, to Monday, May 25 and will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.On Sunday, the food truck parking itself at the festival is The Eighty8 Donut Cafe. A local pianist that goes by the name Kafari will also be performing.”We’ve had nearly 1,500 visitors so far and everyone is left with a smile,” Guenther said.Outside of the festival, McLaughlin Garden is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer and into the fall. Once lilacs are done, there are other blooms to catch, such as hostas, daylilies and wildflowers.
