A successful garden design isn’t just about colour, texture or planting for year-round interest. According to one Chelsea Flower Show judge, there’s a quieter design detail that can instantly make borders look more polished and layered: mid-height planting.

At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, this subtle planting trick appeared again and again across the show gardens. It wasn’t the loudest trend, but this clever layered planting technique was one of the most effective – and it could be the secret to making your own garden feel fuller, softer and more professionally designed.

In the Lady Garden Foundation ‘Silent No More’ Garden, hip-high shrubs and flowers spilled across the borders, creating an immersive, layered effect along the winding path.

A similar approach appeared in the Parkinson’s UK Garden – winner of the People’s Choice Award – where raised planters and a waist-high water feature enveloped visitors, lending the space a cocooning feel.

According to 2026 RHS Chelsea judge and award-winning garden designer Jo Thompson – who delivered a gold medal-winning garden last year – it’s the secret ingredient to an outdoor space that sings.

‘What all the gardens this year have done really well is use that idea of layers, so we’re not just planting at ground level,’ she told Country Living.

‘It’s all too easy just to plant at ground level and to concentrate on that and then wonder why when we step back it all looks a bit flat – actually the key is to actually introduce some mid height.’

Jo explains that the best way to achieve this layer is by introducing shrubs like Elaeagnus – a large evergreen variety with silvery-green foliage, as seen in The Children’s Society Garden – or roses.

‘As a judge I’m often looking for that mid layer,’ she added.

So, if you’re looking for a garden upgrade worthy of the world’s most famous showcase, mid-level planting is a great way to start.
