I've been taking pictures of it for the past three weeks and it looks like the chicks finally hatched! It's pretty cool to have a resident gardening bird friend!

I have a theory it made part of its nest out of the dried thyme plant which I never trimmed after the winter, which would be somewhat hilarious.

So…she needed/needs “thyme” to lay and raise her brood?

Herb infused eggs, those would sell like hotcakes at a farmers market

That might be the best dove nest I have ever seen.

Almost r/stupiddovenests material, but this one’s actually somewhat decent

best constructed dove nest I’ve seen, but it’s compensated by putting it somewhere stupid

It’s good luck! Plus there is a good chance they’ll keep returning year after year. We had some nest in out hanging baskets for 4 straight seasons then we moved 🙁

Honestly that seems like a great spot. It’s pretty, she’s slightly hidden, and I bet it smells lovely

Idk why yall are saying this is dumb placement, its plants all around, covered, hard to find from predators and if i remember correctly, smells nice!

My grandma (born in 1917) used to call mourning doves “rain owls” because “when you hear it, rain is coming”.

She grew up in the mountains of West Virginia so I could see where they could mistake a mourning dove for an owl.

Anyway, thank you for sharing this and bringing back some memories of my grandma! We lost her just short of her 91st birthday back in 2008.

Congrats! Hope this isn’t close to a bedroom window though.

We have doves that try to settle in our apartment balcony planters. Year one they were welcomed. From then on we try to move them on cause their morning cooing is the devils soundtrack!!!

If they do lay, we chalk it up to them beating us and do what we can to help. But there’s still a quiet resentment lol.

I love mourning doves. Such beautiful birds.

She’s doing a great job. It’s protected, pleasantly fragrant, and disturbed by a human often enough to discourage other animals from interfering.

At least it built a nest, instead of just 2 twigs and calling it a nest. 😆

They are very opportunistic on taking any spot and not building the actual nest.

I had one make her nest in one of my hanging ferns and her baby just hatched 😭

Mourning doves will have multiple broods a year, and they are one of the few birds that will reuse the same nest/location. They usually lay 2 eggs each time.

They’ll even come back year after year as long as it’s safe! You might get to see them raise dozens of lil fluff balls over the years!

Also, the papa sits on the eggs during the day, and the mama sits on them at night, they’re a real team 🙂
