Today we add Azaleas, Hostas and a few Nandina. We also added three more yards of mulch, which we will stroll around to see.

  1. I’m glad you dulled the greenhouse sign. I didn’t have the heart to say it reminded me of an amusement park. Love all of your new plantings and your chancing the nandina. Looking forward to see how all of this grows. This garden is pure enchantment. I am thankful for the internet because Kansas pretty far from NJ,

  2. You did an amazing job combining color, texture, structure. It is exquisite! This is how I would have done it. Just gorgeous! I worked as a professional gardener, retired about two years ago for a surgery. Love working in my garden, but it’s nothing like I imagined 😅 have all kinds of challenges from pests animals to clay…

  3. Nandina is cool looking but the berries are poisonous and kill birds. I got rid of all mine. And they are invasive, just like bamboo

  4. We love our heavenly bamboo. I've had it for years in zone 6B Derby KS. Not invasive, winter can hit it sometimes, but it always rebounds. Will spread by seeds and we just pull or transplant the seedlings we don't want.

  5. It's true that nandina is poisonous to birds, but I have nandina domestica all over my garden and the birds leave them alone. They are invasive here (SC), but they're easy to pull out. Too bad you didn't live closer; I could have given you free plants of this lovely shrub.

  6. Just want to make sure you are aware that heavenly bamboo is highly toxic to pets, birds, and all animals.

  7. I have Nandina Zone 7b, non invasive in my area winter months they turn bright red, very little berries and birds leave them alone. You will love them!!

  8. Independence Mo. here. I've had Nandina for several years. No issues with runners, comes back every year and its been cut back to the ground several times and always comes back. Your garden is incredible. 😀

  9. You have created such a beautiful paradise. I live in central NC and i like nandina. I just bought another one last week. They do drop seeds but i certainly dont think they are invasive. Easy to control.

  10. You have a real talent for combining plants that complement each other. Another great video for us to learn from. Thanks.

  11. Love the hostas. I bought some and split them…waiting for it to warm up (ie no nights below freezing) to plant them. The large wooden blocks at 4:00-not sure if that is a border or a few stacked next to each other for garden art (both would be neat).

  12. The nandinas in my yard are very invasive. I tried killing them but they keep coming back. I have to cut them down to the ground or they get leggy and ugly. Mine are 27 years old

  13. Luv the birds but not the bird poo on deck, swing, and other stuff in my yard. I stay away from Nadina and any invasive plants—learned my lesson over and over in past years.

  14. Just remember the whole Nandina plant is toxic, leaves, stems and berries. So just watch out for your chickens and grandchildren. I don't know if it is toxic to birds? You should actually plant them in full sun, because the leaves colour in winter time and it is really beautiful. We live in South Africa and our plant does not die back. We sometimes reach between -5 and -7 degrees Celsius in our area of South Africa and it does not die back. Our milder winters are between -2 and -4 Celsius. It does grow very slowly, so patience is needed for this one. They are incredibly drought tolerant as well. We are going into winter now, so I cannot wait for our spring time again. I enjoy your garden projects. Your garden is beautiful. Greetings from South Africa and God bless!

  15. Nandina and I aren’t friends. I like them, but I seem to lose to late frost every time! And I’m only a couple hours south of you. I hope you have better luck than I did. (Mine were the ones that stay smaller)

Question for you. Have you modified sprinklers as you have added beds or did you start fresh. I’d like to do more landscaping but I’ve got all these zones and I don’t think I can mix impact heads and drip on the same zone. Any advice?

  16. All is looking beautiful Mike and a big shout out Jessie to your pots. I don’t have any issues with my Heavenly Bamboo Nandina, it’s just a slow grower, at least for me in 8b NW Oregon. It’s evergreen here 👍🏻🌱.

  17. So awesome…Everyone has their happy spot in their garden. We know what you feel there. Say, those hostas are outstanding with the red maple. I have to run outside and see where I can do that. I've go 'em both! Thanks for sharing!💚

  18. You don't have to worry about the liriopes. I have liriopes which are planted in full sun. The Landscapers cut them down to the ground in early spring. New growth has already started before the cut down has been done. It grows very fast. It grows back to the original size and more in a few weeks.

    HAPPY GARDENING!

  19. Mike, you and Jesse have truly created paradise! what a retreat from the world around us! I'm in SE Missouri and when I tried Nandina, I found it needed a lot of sun. They are really beautiful plants if you can find the right home for them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful garden.

  20. Hey Mike, I work at a wholesale nursery. We’ve had issues with autumn twist azalea reverting back to amethyst. Still pretty but fyi. Also fertilizing them 2-3 times during the growing season helps them rebloom.

  21. I have nandina domestica 2 feet , pink and fire, pink are my favorite but still small. Their colors is beautiful . Im from NJ

  22. Mike I love how you plant full and Fearlessly ! You're so good with texture and color playing off of each other.I've been gardening for years but you've really taught me a lot about gardening fearlessly!
