Gardeners will know the heartbreak of planting up a border only to find it demolished overnight by hungry slugs and snails.
But there are plenty of beautiful blooms that are easy to grow, affordable and naturally resistant to pests. Fuchsias, in particular, put on a spectacular display throughout summer while escaping slug damage.
Speaking from her colourful stand in the Great Pavilion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, gold medal-winning grower and leading fuchsia specialist Eszter Nemeth, of Roualeyn Fuchsias in Conwy, North Wales, revealed her favourite varieties.
She said: “My top three would be Voodoo, which has a large flower, Blazeaway with its orange blooms, which is very drought tolerant – orange-flowered varieties are always more drought tolerant – and Claudia. It has double petals and looks like a little ballerina.”
For gardeners wanting the best display possible, she recommends increasing feeds during the growing season.
Her tip for bigger, brighter blooms is to “add more potassium to the feeding regime and feed them three times a week.”
