The Door County Master Gardeners Association (DCMGA) will present free programs this month about supporting native birds through landscaping and starting a vegetable garden on a budget.
DCMGA will present “Wild-scaping for Birds” with the Wild Ones – Door Peninsula chapter on Tuesday, May 26, from 6:30 to 8 pm at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay.
Speaker Coggin Heeringa, a representative of DCMGA, Wild Ones and Crossroads, will describe the year-round needs of favorite birds and explain how to create viable habitats for wildlife by following bird-friendly landscape principles – most importantly, incorporating native plants and layered plantings.
Next, DCMGA will present “Starting a Vegetable Garden on a Budget” with the Door County Seed Library on Saturday, May 30, from 9:30 am to 12 pm at Crossroads.
Stacia Dick-Schuster, alumni Master Gardener, will discuss how to economize and grow your own food. The event will feature door prizes and handouts for reference at home. A follow-up presentation on Sept. 19 will cover “Putting Up Your Harvest” – what to do with the produce from the garden as it ripens.
These DCMGA programs include research-based gardening techniques that align with the education requirements of the University of Wisconsin Extension Master Gardener program.
