The powerful poets of old, those wordsmiths who talked up the notion of returning to nature and playing lutes and sipping bubbly elixirs and leaving the busyness of life behind for a short spell, were most definitely onto something big.
But opportunities to strum the strings of a lute or admire a leaf as it dances in the breeze are few these days, and ethereal outings are still mostly found in novels and films.
Still, there are real locations making a shimmering stand in our hectic world, including the Norton Simon Museum, a sylvan spot that happens to have one of the loveliest sculpture gardens anywhere.
Not only is it lovely, but it is freshly renovated, and now you can bask in its beauty over a few summer Fridays. Golden Hour: Music in the Garden is returning to the Pasadena art institution after a year off, and your museum admission is all that is required for entry.
Live and lilting music programmed by Masatoshi Sato is a centerpiece of the relaxing events, as is the chance to stroll in an unhurried fashion as you cast your attention to artworks, trees, flowers, and the changing sky.
Drawing supplies will be on-hand, too, if you’d like to pause, put pencil to paper, and capture one of the sculptures that grace the sun-dappled space.
The Garden Café will also be open, if you’d like a light bite, wine, or a non-alcoholic beverage.
These evenings will summon the magic of summer on select Fridays, with the first one happening May 29. Just look to the end of the month for the dates: May 29, June 26, July 31, and August 28 are the “Golden” dates on the 2026 calendar.
Of course, the Sculpture Garden is always open to museum visitors, but if you’re eager to swirl together sweet sounds, and the soft sky that appears just before sunset, and a delightful dose of summer evening enchantment, make time to experience a glimmering “Golden Hour” in the months just ahead.
