SARASOTA, Fla. — Bold primary colors and suspended works of art — this is artist Alexander Calder.
“So Calder is known as the inventor of the mobile and he really focused on balance and movement,” said Jennifer O. Rominiecki, President and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
His work is currently on display, and the exhibit is called “Alexander Calder “The Nature of Movement.”
It not only includes his works inside their museum space but also living vignette interpretations in the garden space.
It’s a mix of plants and sculpture, a reflection of Calder’s work.
“Alexander Calder was fascinated with the Ringling Circus, and Sarasota of course has been the winter home of the circus since the 20’s,” said Rominiecki.
In fact the pieces inside the gallery space are all on loan from local collectors, and the mobile “Black Cascade: 12 Verticals” is on loan from the nearby Ringling Museum of Art.
“Alexander Calder: The Nature of Movement” is on display at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens through May 31.
