TROY — The 27th annual Troy Hidden Garden Tour returns Thursday, May 21, inviting visitors to explore dozens of private gardens tucked throughout some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

The self-guided tour runs from 4 to 7:30 p.m., rain or shine, in areas surrounding Russell Sage College and Washington Park. The National Weather Service calls for mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s in Troy on Thursday, at least as of Tuesday morning.

“Most people only ever see the facades of our brownstones from the streets,” said Peter Grimm, president of the Friends of Prospect Park, which organizes the tour, in a news release. “This is a special kind of event that invites visitors into the hidden green spaces of our city. It really showcases the humanity and livability of Troy.”

While the gardens tend to share a modest footprint of roughly 20 by 30 feet, no two feel the same, adds Grimm. Some are structured with meandering paths, water features, or koi ponds, while others lean into abundant plantings of blooms, produce and herbs. Several homes on the tour have been used as filming sites for HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” which is slated to resume production in Troy this spring.

“As soon as I bought my house in Troy, I wanted to be a part of the Hidden Garden Tour,” said Rhe Potenza in the release. “The wonderful thing is that all the homeowners are there. You get to meet them and talk with them.”

The Troy Hidden Garden Tour is a fundraiser presented by the Friends of Prospect Park, a nonprofit supporting ongoing improvements to Prospect Park on Congress Street in Troy. Since 1996, the organization has maintained and enhanced the park through cleanups, playground upgrades and improved signage, while also sponsoring free community programming such as live theater, circus performances and summer camps.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Advance physical tickets are available at Truly Rhe, 1 Broadway in Troy and online at hiddengardentour.com. Tickets may also be purchased after 4 p.m. at the check-in table in the Russell Sage College parking lot at 96 1st St. Free parking is available on city streets and in the Russell Sage College lot south of Division Street.
