A gardener has shared six “stunning” flowers that will add variety and “elegance” to your garden – all without requiring a strict watering schedule. Now summer is on the horizon, spending time in the great outdoors becomes a priority for many people.
Those lucky enough to have a garden may be keen on giving it a bit of a spruce to enhance the overall appearance and aesthetic of their outside space. Planting new flowers to add colour and depth may seem daunting, but there are countless experts offering professional advice online.
Ryan Dowsell is a gardener who utilises TikTok to share his top tips and recommendations for building a traditional “English flower garden”. Ryan has detailed how to make gardens more “wildlife friendly”, how to obtain “beautiful flowers in early summer”, “why your plants grow tall and floppy” and much more.
In a recent video shared on the popular social media platform, the gardener revealed six “easy to care for” and long-lasting flowers to plant in your garden for “low maintenance” beauty this summer.

In the footage, Ryan can be seen sitting next to a dense plant and flower border in his garden. Speaking directly to the camera, he said: “Plants I never have to water.
“If you struggle to keep plants alive, then these are the plants you need to grow. They’re low maintenance, love full sun, and they’re drought tolerant when established.”
He started with “the beautiful Salvia ‘Caradonna’”, which he described as having “gorgeous flower spikes” which “look great at the front of a border”.
According to leading gardening charity the Royal Horticultural Society, they “bloom for a long period in summer and early autumn”, and produce “tubular, two-lipped flowers in almost every colour”. The charity states they’re “easy to grow” and “suitable for beds, borders and containers”.
Next, Ryan listed catmint, explaining it’s “a pollinator magnet” which “looks beautiful at the front of a border.” The RHS branded these lavender-blue flowers “dependable” and “tough”.
Third on the gardener’s list was Erigeron karvinskianus, a semi-evergreen plant which “softens a border with its beautiful white and pink flowers”.
@ryandowsell The ultimate easy to care for perennial flowers ?????? These plants thrive in dry, sunny flower borders and low maintenance gardens ?????? Once established, you don’t even have to water them, making them perfect for hotter, drier UK summers ☀️ And because they’re drought tolerant flowers, they all work well in containers too (where they might need a splash of water occasionally) ?????? After that, Ryan moved onto sedums, which he branded “the stars of autumn with their beautiful flowers that are adored by pollinators.”
Next up was the eryngiums, which boast “stunning architectural flowers” which “look great at the front of a border.” These evergreen perennial plants are distinctive in appearance, thanks to their spiky, long blue-grey tough leaves and their rounded, dark blue flowerheads.
Finally, Ryan added: “Verbena bonariensis adds height and elegance to the back of a border.”
Ryan reiterated the plants’ qualities in the caption, where he penned: “The ultimate easy to care for perennial flowers. These plants thrive in dry, sunny flower borders and low maintenance gardens.
“Once established, you don’t even have to water them, making them perfect for hotter, drier UK summers.”
In the comments section, fellow TikTok users were keen to share their views. One person asked: “Are these plants pet friendly?”
Ryan replied: “Yes, none of these plants are known to be toxic to pets or people”.
A third shared: “Writing these down ASAP!” While a fourth said: “Wow stunning!”
Someone else added: “I learnt about new plants from this video! Thank you, the eryngiums are stunning”.
