May is the perfect time to get your garden ready for summer and there’s one item that could make a huge difference. Nets will protect your plants from pests and as the weather gets warmer, you’ll want to ensure there’s minimal risk for your plants.

Garden nets can protect your plants from frost, sunburn and pests, meaning you’ll be giving your greenery the best chance of survival. You can find nets in a range of colours, sizes and shapes if you’re hoping to keep your garden looking its best. By making a small investment, you could see a huge difference and avoid total disaster this summer.

Love the Garden says: “May is all about protecting your plants from those pesky garden pests, as the fruit will be just starting to appear on trees and bushes.

“Strawberries can be protected from birds with netting, and you should check gooseberry bushes for sawfly and caterpillars.

“While protecting your fruit from unwanted pests, it’s important to ensure that pollinators are still able to get to the plants. So, if you do use netting, make sure it’s not too fine. Birds out, bees in!”

Gardeners should always ensure netting is draped over a structure and not directly onto plants.

Make sure it is firmly pegged down to keep it in place.

White netting is more bird and nocturnal animal-friendly than black netting, so it is highly recommended in most garden situations, says The Digger’s Club.

Country Living recommends carefully inspecting lily foliage and removing any beetles by hand. “If you’ve been growing lilies, check foliage for the dreaded lily beetle, and if found remove and dispose accordingly,” they said.

In greenhouses, the threat comes in the form of red spider mites, microscopic pests that thrive in hot, dry conditions.

You can purchase garden netting from Amazon for around £15.

One gardener who purchased some on Amazon said it worked effectively and will last for multiple seasons.

They added that they used it to cover vegetables from bugs and that the item works well as a good deterrent for white and black flies.

By making this small garden change, you can ensure to prevent any pests from ruining your plants.
