MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — A community garden in Mattoon kicked off its summer season Saturday morning.
Volunteers gathered for the first volunteer day of the season at the Fit-2-Serve community garden.
Organizers said the garden has been growing for years, but they have shifted to a regenerative approach, focusing on soil health and growing food without chemicals or heavy equipment.
“In 2025, this garden produced 18,000 pounds of produce. 3,500 pounds of that went to the Mattoon Community Food Center and The Haven,” said Fit-2-Serve Executive Director Beau Scott. “The residents at The Haven and the recipients at the Mattoon Community Food Center like what they are receiving from the produce that we have, knowing that nothing is sprayed on it.”
The garden is on the corner of First Street and Broadway Avenue near St. John’s Lutheran School.
