Recent storm tonight got this tree. My wife wants me to ensure it isn’t coming back from this before I cut it down. So, thank you in advance for confirming that this tree is a goner

With the amount of cambium damage there and bark removal I would be pretty shocked to see that come back without being significantly compromised. Like 99.99% that things a goner.

  2. Sad but correct. It’s not going to make it. Also, tree rings aren’t good for trees. You have some beautiful mature trees in the background all of which have a brighter future if your remove the rings and avoid mulch volcanoes.

  3. I’m not a rocket scientist or doctor, but I have a hunch about the status of your tree.

But to quote a particular demographic here,
“Go employ a certified TRAQ arborist to perform a field inspection. They’re the only qualified people who can tell you it’s done for”

^ do that just to know for sure, lol

It’s not only merely dead, it’s really most sincerely dead.

The final countdown. Yes Not even one vascular cambium seem to attached properly.

Well, you could build a guitar or bass from it, or you could make a baseball bat.

Trees are crazy tough but there is exactly a 0% chance of that tree making it. When the lightning stuck it superheated the moisture in the xylem and phloem which is the part of the tree that transports nutrients and water around the tree. That exploded outward removing the bark like that. Those are the living tissues of the tree and the heat generating instant steam absolutely cooked those tissues leaving no hope. If you got a single linear scar even if it spiralled or did some weird pattern there is hope but it is compromised. This though is “instant” death, well as instant as a tree dies. The remaining leaves will start wilting in the next few days to a week as the tissues meant to bring them moisture and bring nutrients around the rest of the tree are just gone at this point.

Lightning hit our 50 year old pecan tree. The bark totally blew off!! The ground was covered with the bark. It didn’t burn the tree.

That’s going to need a tree service for removal. Have them get rid of the stump as well. It would be nice to get some the wood cut up. Hopefully, insurance will cover the removal.

Silver Maple. Good riddance. If I owned a tree service I would plant them for free.
