ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The municipal greenhouses tucked away in Russian Jack Park are a riot of color right now. They’re filled with thousands of flowers, many nearing full bloom, which are almost ready to be planted.
“We grow all of our plants from seed, and it takes months to get them to this size and flowering,” said Horticultural Supervisor, Annie Dubois. “And then it takes a good month or so of close to 30 employees out there planting every day.”
Dubois said planting will start next week, with a goal of having beds ready for Memorial Day. This year, she said, there’s a patriotic theme to some of the plots and baskets to celebrate the nation’s birthday.
“Well, it is our 250th anniversary of the United States so there’s going to be a lot of red, white and blue probably,” she said.
Two places where there will be no flowers this year are Peratrovich Park and Town Square Park downtown. Dubois said both will be under construction.
“That’s probably surprising because those are two of our main downtown parks, but they are getting makeovers this summer, so they’ll be back online next year.”
Dubois said gardening crews put a lot of work into growing, planting and tending to the flowers throughout the summer. She said they appreciate it when people notice the beautiful flowers.
