SHREVEPORT, La. – Home gardeners looking to add vibrant color and year-round beauty to their yards may want to consider azaleas, according to gardening expert and Akin’s Nursery owner Jennifer McGimsey during this week’s KTBS Garden segment.

McGimsey highlighted several popular azalea varieties, beginning with the Southern Indica azaleas, including lavender Formosa, pink Formosa, and Judge Solomon varieties. These larger azaleas are known for their impressive spring blooms and dense evergreen foliage.

She explained that Southern Indica azaleas become nearly covered in blooms during the spring before transitioning into thick greenery that provides beauty throughout the rest of the year.

McGimsey also encouraged gardeners not to overlook dwarf azaleas, which are ideal for smaller spaces and borders. Among her favorites are Gumpo and Chinzan varieties, both known for their compact size, colorful foliage, and repeat blooming cycles.
