COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Volunteers gathered Friday at the Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio to plant a spring garden that will help provide fresh meals and farm-to-table experiences for families staying at the facility while their children receive medical care.

The garden, located at the Ronald McDonald House on East Livingston Avenue, is part of the organization’s effort to create comforting spaces and healthy meals for families facing difficult circumstances.

Volunteers spent the afternoon planting vegetables and herbs that will be used in meals throughout the spring and summer.

The Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio recently expanded to 206 guest rooms, making it the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world. The organization said it now supports more than 10,500 families each year whose children are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Officials indicate the house saves families an average of $130 per night through lodging, meals, and support services.

The garden project is funded in part through the Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day “Lots of Compassion” grant program.

Organizers told ABC 6 that the goal is to not only provide nutritious meals but also create moments of comfort and normalcy for families during stressful times.
