In the caption accompanying his post, Ben penned: “Here are some garden jobs you can do throughout the month of May! It’s a busy time as the garden really starts to come to life in many different ways, so having a little checklist to be organised can be a good idea.”

Among tips like “plant out hardy annuals” and “tender perennials”, Ben stressed the importance of keeping on top of “watering in dry conditions and feed too”. He said he “likes a seaweed feed” for his plants.

One TikTok user commented: “Seaweed feed is a good tip, cheers!” Others posted emojis to share their appreciation for Ben’s post.

According to leading gardening charity the Royal Horticultural Society, seaweed “has been used as a soil improver for centuries, particularly in coastal areas”. It contains a variety of “useful plant nutrients”, like “nitrogen, potassium, phosphate and magnesium”.

The RHS states: “There are dried and liquidised forms available from garden centres and seaweed is a common additive to fertilisers, both organic and non-organic.”

It’s a powerful and organic option for plant food, as well as a natural bio-stimulant which boosts soil health and strong root growth. It can also help plants to develop resilience against environmental stresses, disease and even some pests.

If you’re keen to utilise seaweed for your plants, you can choose from liquid seaweed which is highly concentrated yet dilutable, so it could be added to your watering can for an easy and speedy multivitamin boost.

Alternatively, seaweed meal or granules, which are designed to be scattered around the base of plants in a bid to improve moisture retention and enhance the soil’s structure on a long-term basis, are more slow releasing.

The RHS adds: “Seaweed products are useful products for organic gardeners wishing to avoid synthetic fertilisers or fertilisers made from animal products, providing a useful source of potassium, magnesium and trace elements. Seaweed and seaweed fertilisers are usually a sustainable, renewable resource.”
