Slightly devastated. I lost my first compost pile before I got to use it.
My neighbor is putting in a below ground pool and his contractor used to work with my brother a few summers ago. The contractor connected with me about dumping the dirt he is removing in the ditch on the back of my property.
I showed him the ditch and I jokingly warned him to not touch my compost. It's near and dear to mine and my boys heart.

You should file suit against that firm for loss of compost! Pile on some punitive damages to discourage them from doing anything like that ever again.

Look at the bright side, it’ll contribute to whatever grows there and generally help the soil health of the area. And you have the chance to build a bigger, better compost pile. Maybe even with a stall. Or the top layer can be confetti. A commemorative marigold. So many options.

I think you have another problem bigger than the compost, that ditch served a purpose, filling it might cause the water to be blocked and end up in your yard or house.
My question is why would you fill in the ditch? Any runoff from the road will just go farther.
Well the good news is compost is renewable and can be made again.

I laughed so hard because I thought the joke was that the kids fell into the compost and then the earth flattened out like dust in the wind

Why would you let them dump dirt in a drainage ditch? That’s what’s keeping your yard from flooding. You have much bigger problems than missing compost…. Which they shouldn’t have fucking touched, but then again they are the type of idiots or asshats who would fill in a drainage ditch like that’s not a terrible idea
