One year ago I posted to this community asking for advice on some girdling roots on my red maple tree (I believe it is a Redpointe maple). I made the cuts that were most largely agreed upon by the community in early summer last year (2025), then basically left the tree alone. This winter I made some structural pruning cuts.
The good news is that the tree has responded very well to the cuts. It doesn't seem to have been phased at all by them and has grown well this year despite the cuts to the roots and the structural pruning I did over winter.
My question is this – what do I do now? I supposed that the cut roots would decay pretty quickly and would be more pliable by this time this year, but they are still pretty firmly wedged where they are. Do I try to sawzall them carefully so I can extract them from the trunk? Or do I simply do nothing until they decay to the point that I can pull them away?
I guess my concern is that, despite cutting the roots last year, the trunk is still being girdled by the cut roots. Is my concern valid? Open to any and all feedback. Thanks!

Nicely done! You cut the left side, but I’d also cut the right. Maples are very good at root grafting, so the root could still be alive. The pressure it can inflict was greatly lessened, but if it’s fully severed it will eventually flake off as the tree expands.
great update!
