I am using carriage bolts to anchor the wooden posts to concrete. How do I drill a "perfect" hole that will match any irregularity in the way the wood seats? They won't be perfectly across for some because of my mediocre concrete pouring skills and the boards are tight in the anchors. My 1/2" drill bit isn't long enough to bore through from only one direction adding complexity. Thoughts?

You could get a longer bit or just mark where the bracket sits on the pole on both sides and try to drill straight. if it isn’t perfect you can pound the bolt through. Nice thing about wood. You are probably overthinking this

If the post doesn’t sit flat the easiest way to make them sit solidly is to use cedar shims, although the posts should be able to sit on the anchor bolts

Get a longer drill bit. Don’t overthink it.
