We joked that the first words out of our children’s mouths would be “Hortonova trellis” because the amount of gardening talk that happens in our house and around the dinner table. Just like young children, your plants will grow quickly, seemingly overnight, and it is also important to provide the right supports for your plants. Trellising plants is necessary to ensure the plants don’t topple over and are kept upright.

In our greenhouses, we use the string trellis method. This is only used in greenhouses. We use it for our indeterminate large tomatoes and cucumbers grown in the greenhouses. A string trellis encourages vertical growth on a single leader. It requires routine maintenance to prune unwanted branches off the plants to help the plants grow up one leader vertically. The plants are then clipped to the string trellis with plastic clips. The foliage of the plan stays separated, so this type of trellis encourages cleaner fruit and optimizes space for higher density planting.
