Now that we’re in spring, homeowners may notice an increase in rat and mice activity around their properties. This season marks a critical breeding period for rodents, when they’re actively searching for food, shelter and reproducing at an alarming rate – making our homes an ideal nesting spot.
Ignoring preventative measures and missing early warning signs can quickly lead to a full-blown rat infestation across your property. Beyond the expense of professional pest control, there’s also the serious health risk of disease transmission. Thankfully, there could be a simple and affordable solution to keep these unwanted visitors away.
Glen Peskett, DIY expert from Saxton Blades, suggests that a common kitchen staple can help repel rats from your home year-round: garlic.

He said: “Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in. But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare.
“Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulfur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented. These compounds are also something rats associate with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering your home.”
Garlic is very budget-friendly as well, with a four-pack available for just 87p at Asda, equating to approximately 22p per bulb.

How to use garlic to repel rats and mice
Place garlic cloves around potential entry points in your property where rodents are most likely to gain access. They tend to be attracted to locations such as basements, garages, kitchens and lofts, so ensure cloves are positioned near any gaps and doorways on the exterior of your property.
Garlic oil, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar are also effective at deterring any pests that may be tempted to enter your home.
But it’s not just repellents that can be effective. Undertaking other measures, such as decluttering, can remove any concealed spaces that rats might use to build nests.
Food waste is a significant draw for rats, so ensure bins are securely sealed, emptied frequently, and clean up any spillages immediately.
Lastly, inspect for gaps, particularly beneath doors or vents, and seal them – even the tiniest openings can permit rats and mice to squeeze through.
