Well, start with exposing the root flare.
Woof. I can’t tell if it’s an external injury (mower too close?) or if there’s something internal that’s causing problems. Regardless the tree leaves look fine but I’d worry about the exposure and bacteria/mold/fungus getting into the center of the tree. Contact an arborist! Maybe there’s a way to seal it from the elements?
