I got what came in the pictures, no roots, nothing. Is green when scratching the bark. Is this right? No roots? The seller responded "They’re tap roots and they’re like that from keeping in dormant state you can check if it is viable by lightly scratching bark if it’s green under it’s alive". Can I get opinions because the me it looks like they chipped a limb off a tree and sent it to me.

Post the listing. That’s not a tree. It’s a cutting.
Edit: Seeing this listing, I still say that this is a cutting. Not a bare root. There isn’t any root.
Cuttings are fine. I’m currently growing a fig from one. But the listing should state that honestly, and the price should reflect what you’re getting.
Was the bottom darker part wrapped in moist paper like it says? Have you planted bare root trees before?
That looks like a taproot that’s possibly dead? U said there’s green so I honestly think it’s fine

This is a persimmon tap root, u can see the roots extending from it
Never bought or planted persimmon but send a pic to the seller and ask, seems like it is as described in the listing tho “bare taproot”, not sure if no roots extending from the taproot is a bad sign tho, id def send the picture to the seller telling them u saw green when u scratched it but are worried
I had some paw paws come that were not much better looking than that and surprised me by weakly clinging to life now for 3 years.
I know nothing about persimmon trees. Did a really quick Google search. It sounds like the persimmon taproot is highly susceptible to breaking and can still be successfully grown with a broken taproot. I say plant it amd see what happens. 🤷♀️
Get your money back. That’s definitely a lie. I planted persimmons tree last year from bareroot. Sure persimmons roots are naturally dark or black which can look concerning but it’s normal. But this one has no roots at all. Looks like whatever roots were there died already. You got scammed
Demand to refund, and if you don’t get it Do a charge back.
Most of the people commenting have no idea what they’re talking about. I work in reforestation and deal with literally thousands of these kinds of trees. Almost EVERY bare root persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) I’ve ever seen looks like this.
It is absolutely a bare root tree, not a cutting.
Everything from about 2″ down from your fingers are roots.
You didn’t get scammed, all the persimmon roots I’ve ever seen have been dark like that.
I’ve planted nearly a million trees personally and I can assure you what you’re holding is absolutely typical for that species. Plant it.
I’d scratch the outer layer of bark off where you want it to root. Get the cambium layer and apply some rooting hormone. Put it in some moist soil and hope for the best.
I did this last fall with a jujube tree my neighbor gave me. It had hardly any roots. I thought it died but had hope and it grew a bunch of leaves this spring. Even he was surprised, but he knows I have a green thumb.
It’s a ftick
