    Yes, people buy this crap.

A few weeks ago, I saw someone on the native plants sub complaining about seeds that they ordered from a website like this. (My comment got deleted by a mod because I was laughing at them.)

  2. I mean as a kid I bought a “blue” rose and the pic was probably filtered what I got was a light lavender color. but these are crazy.

If people are dumb enough to believe these are real, then they kind of deserve it. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

They know how much ppl want to believe. It’s INSANE how ppl don’t have an ounce of skepticism. I remember many years ago there was a dumb book of cat pictures that were colorful like that and this woman i was friends with thought they were real cats. She went full Qanon

There is a youtube video that is laughable. Sky blue hostas growing and flourishing in a snowy garden because they are everblue.

If you go to the supermarket in November and December, you will see poinsettias that have been dyed blue with silver sparkles on them. If that is someone’s idea of a plant, I can see how they might fall for this kind of deception. We all swim in a sea of digital disinformation and AI slop. It is hard to keep up.

People have posted in this sub asking about bright blue hostas, rainbow roses and other AI bs. It’s astonishing to me that it works on people, but it does, so they do it.

  8. This works because the company will not be around long enough for any consumer, consumer group, or government to do anything about it. Every 12-24 months, they form a new company and start a new fake product.

As long as you do not operate from a country that pegs corporate liability to owners after dissolution, you have no liability for anything.

They get away with it because people are gullible and don’t do research. They just send off their money to the scammers. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

My poor mom desperately wanted “the bright blue and black hosta” that she saw on Facebook. Unfortunately, many people over 55 can’t differentiate between real photos/videos and AI generated. That being said, even nurseries alter their real plant photos.

I work at a garden nursery and at least once a week a senior comes in and asks if we have this ridiculous rainbow hosta. I always feel bad when I have to tell them it’s AI. My favorite is when they ask where our red white and blue hosta’s are and tell us we’re wrong when we tell them they’re fake.

Looks like you didn’t unlock offer or you wouldn’t be asking such foolish questions

Etsy used to be such a good place for heirloom seeds and rare propagations but it’s overrun with obvious bullshit now. You’d think the platform would at least care enough to police the most egregious ones.

I hate how prominent they are. I googled Hostas to dshow someone what they look like but the top images were all fake. I shouldn’t have to scroll to see an undoctored image.Ā

The blue-leaved hostas sale ads make me cackle every time. I hope nobody falls for them & gets taken.

Scammers selling these fake seeds just prey on people’s lack of horticultural knowledge. Report them.

People are fools. And a fool and their money are soon parted.

  18. I’ll be honest, I’m not surprised at all that some people believe in it.
There are elderly people getting robbed their entire bank account in one day, so yes unfortunately, it is that easy to lie and steal people. Just needs imagination, on both sides

  19. salbrown

Some people will truly just believe anything, but in my experience most of the people who fall for this stuff are older and less discerning. I think it’s why so much of it is marketed on Facebook or online news articles.

I had to stop an elderly relative from giving all her personal info to a sketchy site for a free ā€˜rainbow Hoya’ a few months ago. She’s not fully there mentally anymore and she’s the exact kind of person these scammers want to target. It’s very sad honestly.

The worst offenders are the Coleus seed sellers. I bought some one time when I was ā€œuneducatedā€. It was mildly infuriating to see a green plant with slightly purple leaves instead of vibrant red. That’s on me but it’s still annoying af.
