They are adorable, but I cannot stand the smell. It’s like piss painted potpourri. And every year, this one blooms more aggressively. A dozen clusters open currently, at least as many still to go. Horrific in the morning. And I hear some people like it? Wtf, explain yourselves.

Some people like piss and potpourri. Don’t yuck our yum.
Mine smell like plastic chocolate to me. So basically tootsie rolls.
I don’t like the smell either, it’s too heavy and sweet, like grandma perfume
To me they always smelled like cheap chocolate perfume.

The nectar on the florets is delicious tho lol
I have a krimson queen. Mine smells like chocolate, with a hint of maybe honey.
I feel the same way about hyacinths. Yuck
How else are you going to get those pollinators to rub on them?
Mine smell like a tootsie rolls and I absolutely hate that fake chocolate smell 🤮 they look beautiful though lol
I hear different varieties smell different. Maybe you could trade yours for one you prefer?
So many tootsie roll comments! I’m going to get some and do a painful side by side. I would never describe the smell as chocolatey. Perception is wild.
That sounds awful but wow so cute 🥺
I like the smell of my hoyas however they start to give off scent in the evening. During the day they don’t do much … Fresh and flowery
I think they smell like Hersheys chocolate, the thing is Hersheys smells a bit poopie to me
Ho ya they do
I had one that smelled like rotting fruit while I have one now smells so wonderful.
My mom said the exact same thing about my old hoya and I don’t get it tbh! I never had a problem with the smell. But I guess we’ll see if that changes when my new one flowers lol.
Some do. Some don’t.
I chop them off before the flowers open because I hate it so much :/. You’re not alone! I’m thinking I might’ve gotten all of the branches that flower now, because it’s been a couple years since they flowered at all.
Some smell divine! I had one that smelled like cinnamon. And another that smelled like honey.
I’m obsessed with the butterscotch smell of my Rosita! Different Hoyas have different scents and the same varieties even seem to smell different to some people.
Yes, I also find they stink in a foul way, though they are beautiful
Man folks say that the hoya fitchii smells floral and all mine smelled like was bologna 😂
Agreed on carnosa smelling bad OP. It’s like a faux chocolate
If you want one that doesn’t have a scent, Caudata Sumatra is one I’ll always recommend. Cardboard fuzzy leaves with dainty and fuzzy flowers.
They smell spicy and like garbage to my sister (and probably me as well) because she is allergic.
Each variety smells different though 🤷 I just recently bought one that supposedly smells similar to honey. I havent had it bloom yet so I can’t report back on that but I also kinda like the weird musky smell of carnosa so y’know… Everyone has different scents they like and dislike.
my hoya krohniana smells like cat piss when it blooms. linearis, ilagiorum, mathilde, obovata all smelled lovely to me though.
Depends on the Hoya. They have a variety of scents.
I put a small ziplock over each cluster. Helps cut down the smell and catches the flowers when they eventually fall off so they don’t make a sticky mess everywhere.
I’ve never had that problem 😔 🥀
I have a few different varieties of hoya in my plant room. One bloomed last year and I thought perhaps the cats peed in a corner or something. I spent a week searching for the source of the offending smell before I figured out it was my plant blooming. This year I have 3 different ones blooming and it just smells like an old lady’s perfume in the house.
I have a Hoya burtoniae and it smells just like butterscotch. But yeah a lot of the others are just sickly floral
Mine smelled like cigarettes. Like a house that’s been smoked inside of for decades and the smell is deep in the walls and carpet.
I put a post up about it thinking it was the seller 😂😂😂 turns out sometimes they smell like cigarettes and even cat pee
I’m newer to Hoyas, only one of mine that has bloomed is my sp. aff. Burtoniae and it smelled like butterscotch and caramel cupcakes
Couldn’t agree more 😩
My grandma passed away suddenly in 2015, and my grandpa passed away unexpectedly 10 weeks after her. When we cleaned out their place, we found a small Hoya clipping propagating in a coffee cup on the counter. The Hoya bloomed for the first time in 2024.

I’ve loved her blooms (and scoffed at the smell) ever since 💗
I have the same one. Stinky, messy but beautiful flowers.
Bro, when mine bloomed I went to the basement to sleep. Absolutely horrid smell.
I had no idea different varieties smelled different. I always thought mine smelled like chocolate covered cherries. Definitely a feint chocolate smell. I personally love it.
