What do you guys do with props that only have roots?

I wait till they grow a leaf or die. I have one prop that’s a year old now, no signs of growth aside from a full root system

  2. Lightly cover the roots and give em more time. I start to water mine once roots have developed, but everybody handles their props differently.

  3. I take a small layer of the stem off the leaf. Scrape it with a toothpick. Typically it’s there, or there is a bug living there.

I leave them be until the mother leaf is literally all crispy. If she has nothing left to give and still only roots, it gets picked out and tossed in the “salad bowl”. That is, empty pot that has a little dinosaur figurine “munching” over the side of pot. That’s is where the crispy leaves go … to become Diplodocus or Brontosaurus ? salad

  5. So in the orchid and houseplant world, they are big on this stuff called keikei paste. It’s a lanolin-based paste that contains cytokinins. Cytokinins are one 2 big classes of plant hormones that affect growth, the other being the auxins. These two groups work in opposition to each other: auxins promote root growth, cytokinins promote vegetative (leaf) growth.

The houseplant folks use keikei paste on nodes to promote new growth and branching. It’s apparently unbelievably effective at waking up zombie nodes.

I’m going to try applying a little keikei paste to my zombie props and see if it encourages plantlet formation. But, it’s an interesting idea for anyone if they have the paste. You only use a pinpoint amount at the node where growth occurs.

  6. These look like they’ve been out here for a long time and are starting to dry up, and still not yet grown any leaves. I’m not sure about the climate you’re in (I’m in tropical region) and whether that affects anything, but in my case, my props tend to grow better when left in regular potting mix rather than the gritty mix that i bought for them succulents. In fact, the one i left in my lucky bamboo pot grew the biggest. And those props that i started out by placing in gritty mix almost never grew much until i put them onto regular potting mix. (My guess is the gritty mix doesn’t have any nutrients for them)
