My backyard was overrun with red/purple deadnettle, creeping charlie, and so many other weeds since I moved into my house 3 years ago. Finally got serious about it last summer and nuked it all (1, sorry I don't have a picture of it over run with weeds). Once it was dead I tilled the whole lawn in late September (2). Put down some compost top dressing and spread fescue seed probably a little too late in the fall, but better late than never.

It started sprouting in the middle of November (3) and survived the winter just fine (4). Over seeded early spring + weed n' feed a few weeks ago.

Finally have a lawn that I'm happy with (5). We'll see how it does over the summer, but I'm hoping my sprinkler on a timer (four times a day for 15 minutes each) keeps it all happy.

Some darker spots from my dog (6) giving localized nitrogen applications.

Looking good, I don’t recommend [weed and feed though](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4baXERBuZv4), terrible product. Just put down a proper pre-emer and fert and you will be much better off.

Also, that’s a lot of water per day, you may end up with fungus if you do not cut back. You should be watering 1-2x/wk for a total precipitation of 1-1.5″, otherwise you will have all kinds of problems like root rot, fungus, etc. from overwatering.

I don’t think it’s going to do super well in the summer, but I guess it’s worth waiting to see. If you had less shade from all those trees, you could easily put down Bermuda/zoysia sod and call it a day.
